Before the COVID-19 pandemic, 1 in 6 people in the EU suffered from mental health issues. This situation has worsened with the unprecedented crises experienced over the past years.

The pandemic has placed additional pressures on people’s mental health, especially among the young and those with pre-existing mental health conditions.

The aftermath of the pandemic has also affected the global healthcare industry in ways of a massive build-up of delayed treatments, surgeries (elective care), screenings, and appointments (primary, dental, mental health) primarily caused by the pandemic shifting resources to urgent COVID care, leading to longer wait times, worsened conditions, unprecedented emotional and physical pressure on healthcare workers leading to a shortage of staff, and increased strain on healthcare systems globally.

Addressing it involves governments and providers boosting capacity, but this also faces challenges like staffing shortages and balancing patient needs with system sustainability.

Aside initiatives like encouraging empowerment in general from people en patients specifically, and taking responsibility, it's also important to reduce the pressure on healthcare as quickly as possible and drastically reduce healthcare costs.
